MX TEAM HONDA RACING NEW ZEALAND CONTINUE
THEIR CHASE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS
DEMON ENERGY NZ MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS
ROUND 2 - HAWKES BAY
HAWKES BAY, NZ - NOVEMBER 08-09, 2008
The sun shone brightly in the Hawkes Bay for round two of the Demon Energy
NZ Motocross Champs over the weekend. The track was well prepared, dry and
fast and the Hawkes Bay Motorcycle Club worked extremely well to contain
the dust.
MX Team Honda Racing continued with their current form, with all the
boys picking up podium finishes.
“It was great standing under the Honda tent at the end of the day, with a team who had ridden hard and all either
maintained their Championship position or increased their leads,” said team manager Shayne King travelling home.
In the MX1 class, Tauranga’s Peter Broxholme qualified second fastest, just .361 seconds behind Suzuki’s Scott Columb.
Showing King that he had the speed to race at the front, following his crash at the Taupo International Motocross a week
ago, in which he damaged a shoulder.
Broxholme raced hard, despite the pain in his shoulder, picking up a third and a second behind Columb and Yamaha’s
Damien King, which allowed him to maintain his championship standing.
He came into the event two points behind leader Damien King and left two points behind.
Rotorua’s Michael Phillips was again the star in the MX2 class, setting the fastest qualifying time for the event on his ’09
CRF250, which was nearly a second faster than the 450s in MX1.
Phillips then went on to take two clear wins, one from team-mate Christchurch’s Justin McDonald and the second from Daryl
Hurley (Suzuki) with McDonald fourth.
Phillips left the Hawkes Bay with a nine point lead over Hurley.
Taupo’s Cameron Dillon was in the middle of a four brand battle in the combined 125cc Two-Stroke class and the Under
21s. Dillon led the group during both races and finished the day with a second and a third behind overall 125cc series
leader Damien King (Yamaha) and shared the minor placings with Matt Hunt (Suzuki)
Dillon maintained his second position over all and first in the Under 21 class.
The Team now has a few weeks off, which will allow bodies to mend, before the heading for Timaru for round three.
Hawera’s Luke Burkhart is determined to be out on his ’09 CRF450 at round three.
