AM-PRO YAMAHA JASON RAINES
HARE SCRAMBLES RACE REPORT
AMA EASTERN HARE SCRAMBLES
ROUND 2, PORT ELIZABETH, NJ
Round 2 of the AMA Eastern Hare Scrambles series took place in the tight woods of Port Elizabeth New Jersey on this
Mothers day weekend. The sun was shining and the 75 degree weather couldn't have been any better for the riders that
where prepared to do 3 hours of battling over the 11 mile track. The track was tight and technical and the rain the night
before made the track conditions ideal.
Wally Palmer stole the holeshot on his Christini, Axis, Moose backed Kawasaki followed by Jerod Stoner, Andrew Delong,
Shock Doctor, Muscle Milk,KTM backed Michael Lafferty, and Am-Pro, FMF, Yamaha's Jason Raines. The riders battled
tooth and nail on the open sand portion of track before heading into the tight woods. LAfferty moved up quickly and
positioned himself behind Palmer by the time the riders entered the single track. "I didn't get the greatest of jumps, but
made some good moves to move through the pack pretty quick before we got to the woods" Lafferty said. The running order
when they entered the woods was Palmer, Lafferty, Stoner, Raines and Delong.
As the first lap wore on Am-Pro, FMF, Yamaha's Raines slipped past Stoner when he made a mistake and missed a corner.
Palmer and Lafferty had gained about 10 seconds on the rest of the field and where pushing hard. "Once I got past Stoner,
I had a little ground to make up and pushed hard to get up there to Mike and Wally". Then, about mid-way through the lap,
Palmer went off the track and gave the lead to Lafferty. "I missed a corner and went off into some bushes, I tried to just push
through them, but a vine got wrapped around my neck and about tore my head off! I reached up and when I looked at my
glove there was blood all over it!" Once Palmer got going again he was on a mission to get back into the lead again and
when he reeled Lafferty back in, Lafferty pulled to the side and let him past. "Wally caught back up to me after his mistake
and my bike was cutting out like there was something caught in the main jet, the bike just wouldn't rev so I moved over and
Wally went by."
At the completion of lap 1, it was Palmer, Lafferty and Raines toe to toe followed by Stoner and Delong. Palmer pulled into
the pits to seek some attention on his badly cut up neck."My neck was burning really bad and I could feel blood running
down my chest so I wanted to make sure I hadn't hit a vein!" Out front, Raines got around Lafferty, only to have Mike pass
him back in the next corner. The battle was on.
From that point on, the fans got a great show and saw their hometown hero Lafferty and Raines swap the lead spot time and
time again. "We both took turns leading and each one of us would try and pull away but neither one of us could, I knew
then it was going to come down to who made the least amount of mistakes" Raines commented.
Heading into the 6th and final lap of the day Raines was leading with Lafferty on his back fender. "I was right on Jason and I
knew it was going to be a tough last lap battle to try and find a way around him and then he just rode off the side of a little
hill and I thought, man that was easy!" After the mistake from Raines, Lafferty pushed his Shock Doctor, Muscle Milk,FMF,
Michelin, Motorex, KTM on to the finish while Raines tried to make up the time he lost on his Am-Pro, FMF, Kenda, MSR
backed Yamaha "I was going up a little hill and I thought it went to the right after the hill, but it went straight and I just rode
off the side of the hill! When I got back on the trail I just couldn't get back up to Mike."
Lafferty crossed the finish line after the 3 hour battle with a 20 second cushion over Raines."It was a great race, we battled
back and forth all day, it reminded me of our old GNCC days. I trusted him and knew he would make a bad move on me,
which made for great racing. This race is really close to my home and it was great to get a win in front of all my friends and
family."
Plamer on his Axis, Moose, Motorex, Boyesen back Christini recovered form his battle with the vine to take a hard earned
3rd on the day followed by KTM riders Stoner and Delong.
With his second place finish, 5-time Hare Scrambles Champion Raines now moves into the lead in the series points
standings before heading to the next round in Rhinelander, WI on May 24.
