LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS
ROUND 1, GLEN HELEN
Grant Starts The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship On The Podium
Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif. is known for its “Talladega” first corner, a steeply banked turn more
reminiscent of NASCAR than motocross, and “Mt. St. Helens,” a 200 foot high precipice that requires skill to climb, and the
utmost concentration to descend at speed. The track has been a mainstay on the circuit for 15 years, and has had the
distinction of always either opening, or closing the series. This year, the historic track opened the 12-round 2009 Lucas Oil
AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
The motocross series has 40 competitors race two 30 minute plus two-lap races, called motos. The overall results of both
motos determine the final position for the event. In the first moto, JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Josh Grant started his rookie
premier (450) class motocross season in the same manner he started the now concluded supercross series. Grant began the
race in second, but moved into the lead on the first lap. He led the race well past the half way mark, and with only five laps
remaining relinquished the lead but finished a strong second place. Cody Cooper started the moto mid-pack, rounding the
first turn in 18th. Cooper methodically worked his way forward on the treacherous Glen Helen circuit, finishing the moto in
11th.
In the second moto, Grant again started strong, running in second place for the first five laps. On lap six, Grant fell back to
fourth, where he stayed until the checkers. His 2-4 moto finishes earned him third overall, and a place on the victory
podium in only his first 450 class motocross race. Cody Cooper again had difficulty at the start, and hovered in and out of
the top-10 during the moto finishing in 12th. Coopers 11-12 finishes earned him eighth overall. After one of 12 rounds, the
series points are:
1. Ryan Villopoto 50
2. Mike Allessi 42
3. Josh Grant 40
4. Chad Reed 38
5. Davi Millsaps 31
6. Tommy Hahn 29
7. Mike Brown 27
8. Cody Cooper 19
9. Weston Peick 18
10. A. Short 16
The next round of the series will be the Hangtown Motocross Classic on May 30 in Sacramento, Calif. The first motos of
both the 250 and 450 classes will air live on www.allisports.com starting at 4:30 p.m. (EST). The second 450 moto will air
live on SPEED at 9:00 p.m. (EST).
